Used To Be was founded by Vanessa Schreiner to explore a new value system in fashion, rooted in transformation, material awareness, and conscious production. Based in Vienna, the brand reflects Schreiner’s approach to recontextualizing existing garments and overlooked resources into contemporary pieces that carry both past and present. With each collection, Used To Be reinterprets sourced materials — ranging from second-hand garments to deadstock fabrics and discarded objects — transforming them through deconstruction and reconstruction. Committed to a transparent and responsible approach, Used To Be collaborates with specialized productions and prioritizes existing and unused resources over newly produced materials. Vanessa Schreiner began her career working with Bottega Veneta and gained early experience at Vetements, where she developed her interest in deconstruction and garment transformation. After winning the Green Concept Award in 2022 she was selected in 2024 as a finalist of the 40th Festival International de Mode, de Photographie et d'Accessoires - Hyères.
Through its practice, used to be proposes a slower and more deliberate way of making fashion — one that values process, material history, and longevity over constant renewal.
